Are You Looking for a Career in Advertising?
Is creativity your cup of tea? Have you ever thought seeing a TV commercial that you can do it much better? Then advertising is probably the right career option for you. The world of advertisement might be glamorous but at the same time developing a career in advertising is very challenging.
If you are interested in creative writing or creative design then you can try your hand at advertising. To be a part of the creative department of any ad agency is a dream job for most of the talented people. But instead of joining a big ad agency right away you can start your career from a small ad firm. This will help you to acquire the knowledge and expertise you need to work in a reputed advertising agency.
Working in an ad agency is quite rewarding. Starting from the creative director to the client depends on you for the success of an ad campaign. This is sure to boost your confidence as well as your creative power.
However the advertisement industry is not only about creativity. If you have good marketing and analyzing abilities advertising can be a bright career for you as well. People often tend to visualize an ad firm full of creative heads.
But in reality you will find a number of people in an ad agency who are engaged in other works. There are media directors, media coordinators, media planner, account executives, researcher director, research account executive, traffic managers and so on.
These people are as important as the creative minds. People working in the accounts department bridge the gap between the client and the art department and production department. Maximizing the effectiveness of the media and minimizing the media cost is the responsibility of the people working in the media services department. The researches mainly do works like project design, statistical application, mathematical modeling and so on.
Building a career in advertising is quite difficult. If you are willing to work in an ad agency you should have the skill to work under high pressure. When a campaign is successful you share the glory. Similarly when a campaign fails you are partially responsible for that. Meeting short deadlines or doing last minute changes is not at all easy. But when you love your job these things hardly matter.
It is not necessary that the creative minds will always come up with an exclusive idea. Moreover an idea might not be equally appealing to all. While working in an ad firm you will find that even a simple print ad goes under several revisions and changes before it gets approved.
You may have produced your best design. It still might face strong criticism. Learn to take it positively as it is part of your job. You are the one who need to revise it and it will only enhance your work.
Before staring a career in advertising remember that it is not the typical 9-5 working hours. You need to work even in the evening and week ends. You need to travel whenever your job requires.
Advertising jobs are challenging as media jobs. But if you are determined, dedicated and honest towards your job no one can stop you from achieving a promising career in advertising.
